The opening round of the 2024 AFL season has four matches with only 8 teams playing – all matches are in NSW or Queensland. This is the earliest that the AFL season has ever started. The round starts on Thursday 7th March with Sydney Swans playing Melbourne at the SCG, with the final match GWS Giants v Collingwood played on Saturday 9th March. The largest crowd is expected at the Sydney v Melbourne match. All matches are highly anticipated including replays of both of last years Preliminary Finals and Damian Hardwick coaching against his old team for the first time.

Probably the most anticipated match of the round will be the Collingwood v GWS Giants match after the two teams played a classic Preliminary Final in 2023.
