The opening round of the 2024 AFL season has nine matches with all 18 teams playing. The round starts on Thursday 14th March with Richmond playing Carlton at the MCG, with the final match Fremantle v Brisbane Lions played on Sunday 17th March. The largest crowd is expected at the Richmond v Carlton match. Collingwood will unfurl their Premiership flag against the Sydney Swans at the MCG. Hawthorn and Essendon continue their rivalry at the MCG. Four matches are played at the MCG, with no match being played at Marvel Stadium.

Probably the most anticipated match of the round will be the Collingwood v Sydney Swans match after the two teams played a classic Preliminary Final in 2022, though Tigers and Blues fans have been camping out since the fixture was released for tickets to their Season Opening clash.
